A gardener, concerned about the waste of felled trees, wants to make good use of them. There is nowhere to dispose of the wood. If taken to the forestry association, a fee must be paid. The idea is to make charcoal from the felled wood by building a kiln.
Once the kiln is built, there is a shortage of raw logs. Currently, we have access to three locations, having requested permission to use the mountains.
The best wood for charcoal making is oak, known as "kashi." Unfortunately, oak is scarce in this area called "Skayama," where there is a lot of sand.
Next in line is the oak tree, also known as "nara" or "hoso." It serves as food for bears and deer. Among oaks, there are different types such as "oonara" and "konara," distinguishable by examining the acorns.
This year, we have burned charcoal three times a month, totaling 30 barrels.
we also sell the charcoal for grilling fish and for bungalows.
The prefectural office called to request low-intensity charcoal, like that made from pine or chestnut wood, for tempering blades.
Beech wood yields a soft, fluffy charcoal. There is an ample supply of it.
Both hard and soft charcoal are used.
Excessive heat can damage blades. Therefore, it's essential to use charcoal with lower heat intensity.
Blacksmiths use charcoal made from pine wood.
